The dreams started after the first night without him, although they were more like nightmares. He sent her a cheque in the mail, but was true to his word of not contacting her again. Amber was furious, but there was a tiny bit of relief in the first few days. It was nice walking around alone, absolutely sure she had completed freedom and privacy. She also had plenty of time and money to take a vacation, which she intended to take advantage of immediately. Then the nightmares began—long scenes of pursuit through jungles and forests, always ending in the same place: the cliff where they had first met. In the dream, she’d always come to the lip and stare down with her toes hanging over, wondering if she should make the leap and risk injury or death. She would turn to look back, and it was never a monster—it was always Miles. It was only when she realized that she still wanted to jump that she knew she really did love him; all her life, she’d done anything rather than let herself be vulnerable. This was her mind showing her that she was headed off a cliff if she continued this route.

After a week, the stress started to get to her, physically. She was suffering from anxiety attacks most mornings. She took a trip to the drugstore to stock up on supplies, not even bothering to change out of her pajamas. She bought a new thermometer, then paused at the head of feminine care aisle when she realized something: she hadn’t had her period that month. She grabbed a pregnancy test for good measure and headed back home to take it, her hands shaking as she unwrapped the plastic. Amber had only taken a test once in her life, but she went through the motions as though she’d done it a hundred times. When she’d finished, she starred at the results in disbelief: positive. After only two months?

Amber didn’t know what to do, and was on the brink of flipping a coin when there was a knock at her door. She peered out the peephole, heart racing, but she didn’t recognize the person on the other side. She opened the door to find a man with a clipboard and pen waiting expectantly.

“Amber Reilly?” he asked.

She nodded.

“Sign here.”

Amber signed the paper without reading, only realizing her mistake when it was too late. Then the man handed her a key and walked away, leaving her to stare at the Honda insignia, confused. Are these keys to a new car? No way.

Amber raced down the hall and past the delivery man, bursting out the door in time to see a tow truck pulling away from the parking lot. Her Civic was sitting in its spot, painted a matte white and looking as though it had undergone a complete overhaul. She walked forward cautiously and got in the drivers side, running her hand over the new leather seats in awe. There was a new radio and an A/C system, but other than that, it was the same.
